The Victorian Order of Nurses Windsor-Essex urgently needs 75 new volunteers to support its Meals on Wheels program.
"At the height of the pandemic, we delivered frozen meals only with limited routes and limited volunteers," said Meals on Wheels Coordinator Christine Brush. "We are now back to delivering hot meals, Monday to Friday, year-round, across the City of Windsor."
While demand for the meals is back to pre-Covid numbers, many volunteers haven't returned, putting the program in a difficult situation.
"Anyone who has delivered meals or received meals knows that our delivery is about more than the meal," continued Brush. "Meals on Wheels also provides a safety check and a friendly smile that may serve as a lifeline to isolated seniors."
The volunteers are often the only person the client may see all day.
Brush said volunteers must be able to commit to a minimum of two hours a month, although ideally, two hours a week is best for the program.
Volunteers deliver over 4,000 meals monthly, totalling more than 300 hours of volunteer service.
