Parents who would like their children to have a bilingual education will have another option this fall.
The Windsor Essex Catholic District School Board (WECDSB) has announced that French Immersion will be offered at Sacred Heart Catholic Elementary in LaSalle, starting with the 2023-2024 school year. Trustees approved the plan at their meeting Tuesday night.
"I’ve heard from many families who want this program for their children, so I’m thrilled that it’s going to be launching soon," said Trustee Frank DiTomasso, who represents LaSalle.
Sacred Heart will be dual-track in the next school year, meaning that registration is offered for English and French instruction.
Students entering junior kindergarten to Grade 1 may now register to begin French Immersion in September. So far, there are 23 students, but Superintendent of Education in K-12 Achievement Jouwana Tawil says the more, the merrier.
"Given the rich French historical tradition in the area, and the fact that so many parents are interested in French Immersion for their children, we’re confident that this program is going to fill up quickly," said Tawil.
The addition of French Immersion to Sacred Heart brings the English Catholic board's total of schools offering the curriculum to nine elementary schools and five secondary schools.
