New public elementary school to be built in Lakeshore

Lakeshore residents will soon see a brand new elementary school constructed to serve the growing number of families in the area.

The Greater Essex County District School Board announced it has purchased 5.7 acres of land just east of Rourke Line Road, north of Girard Drive. The address of the property is 1469 County Road 22 in Lakeshore.

The new school is expected to accommodate up to 582 students in an area that has recently seen significant residential growth. It is also expected to help alleviate some of the enrolment pressure being experienced at Belle River Public School and Lakeshore Discovery School.

"Funding of $13.02 million for the school was granted by the Government of Ontario and the Ministry of Education in February, 2022 in response to a business case submitted by the board," read a statement from the GECDSB.

Other details including what the school will look like and a name have yet to be determined. The board said its next step will be to seek out an architect to begin the design process.

A public meeting is also being planned for locals to receive more information about the project.
