City sets sights on next phase of Cabana Road improvements

With work on Cabana Road between Dominion Boulevard and Hwy. 3 coming to an end later this month, the City of Windsor is looking to the east and the next phase of construction.

The next phase, the fifth, starts in 2024, and the City of Windsor has to start planning, finish designs, and start early engineering work on the stretch between Sixth Concession Road to Walker Road.

Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens touted the work so far on Tuesday.

"Windsor is growing rapidly," he said in a release. "Various planning and construction phases are underway on our new EV battery manufacturing facility, regional acute care hospital, and international bridge. With a $106-milion investment in roads and sewer projects like this in 2023 alone, we are continuing to ensure our economy thrives and residents can access safe and efficient transportation to meet current and future needs."

In phase 4, the city spent almost $19-million to expand Cabana Road West from two lanes to four, install wider sidewalks and bike lanes, upgrade water mains and storm sewers, and add a new right-hand turning lane at Hwy. 3.

Next, the city will focus on improvements on the east end of Cabana Road.

Traffic along Cabana Road East could increase significantly once the new hospital on County Road 42 opens. Shovels should be in the ground for that project in 2026.

"Planning and design activity has already begun regarding continued expansion, further east of Walker Road where Cabana becomes County Road 42," said the city's release.

Utility lines are being relocated now to allow the next stage of construction to begin.
