The Windsor region will receive an additional $4-million a year to provide homelessness prevention and housing support programs.
Each year, the City of Windsor will receive $16,698,400 to deliver the services throughout Windsor and Essex County. That's a 34 per cent increase over the previous year.
"We heard loud and clear that every dollar of the existing funding was being used and stretched to its limit and that we really could not achieve the goals of the community and help people out without a change," said Windsor-Tecumseh MPP Andrew Dowie.
City of Windsor Commissioner of Human and Health Services Andrew Daher indicated the funds were desperately needed.
"This is going to ensure that our emergency shelters remain staffed and funded and it's also going to provide additional assistance for rent assistance or utility assistance for people who could potentially be losing their home," said Daher.
Some of the funds will also go toward the continued operation of the homelessness hubs in Windsor and Leamington.
The funds are part of the proposed 2023 provincial budget. There's an additional $202 million in the budget for these programs province-wide. The budget has not yet been passed in the Ontario legislature.
