Slight jump in youth crimes in first quarter of 2023

There was an increase in police incidents involving youth in Windsor during the first quarter of 2023.

Windsor Police Service statistics show an increase of eight incidents in January, 10 in February, and 11 in March compared to the previous year.

Overall offences were down in 2022 with a total of 87 incidents.

Police Chief Jason Bellaire indicated not all of the incidents led to charges.

"Even in cases where, perhaps, under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, something may not have been done we're trying to facilitate entry into diversion or other programs more than we were before," said Bellaire .

He also said a portion of the increase may be related to enhanced processes to capture the raw data within the records management system.
