Police will work to connect people to SafePoint services

The Windsor Police Service is one of many community partners working to make the SafePoint consumption and treatment site a success.

Police Chief Jason Bellaire indicated officers want to work with the health community to ensure people get the help that they need.

"We rely on our subject matter experts here in the city of Windsor and in our region who are specializing in health and medical to make those decisions, and we're there to support them to make sure that they have a safe environment and that the environment in the area is safe as well," said Bellaire.

He indicated officers will work to connect anyone struggling with addiction to the services available in the community.

SafePoint has its own security staff who will be on-site during regular operations of the centre.

Bellaire said no extra patrols will be scheduled unless they are warranted.

"We have a very capable group of officers, we have the city-centre patrol that works in that area. We see them on bikes, on foot, and in cars and they are excellent at what they do. They are already working with the security teams there, they are already coordinating to make sure that we have what we need there," said Bellaire.

The SafePoint consumption and treatment centre opens to clients on Wednesday, April 26, 2023.
