Ontario Provincial Police in Essex County arrested six people within 48 hours for suspected impaired driving.
Three of the drivers were arrested in Tecumseh, two in Leamington, and one in Lakeshore.
First, a 23-year-old Windsor man was stopped at 2:17 a.m. Saturday on Tecumseh Road East in Tecumseh. He was charged with operating with over 80 milligrams of alcohol in blood and will have a chance to respond to the charge in a Windsor court on May 3.
An OPP officer from the Leamington detachment stopped a driver on Talbot Street East at 2:55 a.m. Saturday. A 43-year-old Leamington man is charged with driving with over 80 milligrams of alcohol in blood, driving without a licence, driving with an open container of alcohol, and driving with cannabis readily available. He has a May 4 court appearance scheduled.
At 5:22 a.m. Saturday, a driver called 911 to report someone stopped in a live driving lane on County Road 2 near County Road 42 in Lakeshore. A 24-year-old Lakeshore man was stopped and arrested for driving while impaired and driving with over 80 milligrams of alcohol in blood. The driver has a court date on May 16.
A vehicle was spotted driving erratically on Erie Street North in Leamington at 2:19 a.m. Sunday. After an OPP patrol officer stopped the vehicle, the 26-year-old driver from Tecumseh is charged with driving with over 80 milligrams of alcohol in blood. A court appearance is set in Windsor for May 11.
An officer from the Tecumseh detachment was patrolling Tecumseh Road East near Shawnee Road at around 2:36 a.m. Sunday, and spotted someone entering a vehicle and trying to drive. The 45-year-old driver from Windsor was arrested for driving while impaired, driving with over 80 milligrams of alcohol in blood, resisting arrest, and assaulting an officer. He also faces a May 11 court date.
Finally, a driver on County Road 22 near Lesperance Road in Tecumseh called 911 at 2:44 a.m. Monday, to report someone stopped in a lane of traffic. An officer soon arrested the 30-year-old driver from Tecumseh on charges of driving while impaired and driving with over 80 milligrams of alcohol in blood.
Each vehicle was automatically impounded for 90 days, along with an automatic driver licence suspension of seven days.
"No amount of alcohol or drug in your system is safe when driving," said OPP Essex County Detachment Commander Angela Ferguson. "Always arrange to have a designated driver or make a plan that doesn't include driving. We appreciate and rely on our community members to contribute to everyone's safety by calling 9-1-1 if you suspect someone is driving under the influence."
None of the charges laid have been proven in court.
