Contract talks continue, but the MPP from Windsor West wants more action from Queens Park in protecting striking workers.
Lisa Gretzky of the NDP rose in the Ontario Legislature Tuesday to ask for government action on the Windsor Salt strike, which has gone on for eleven weeks.
"Windsor Salt workers from Unifor Locals 240 and 1959 are continuing to fight for job security against the outsourcing of their jobs by an American hedge fund company," said Gretzky. "Even the table salt we have in the kitchen and dining room here at Queen’s Park is produced by these workers. Windsor Salt workers want to know, what has the Premier done to support them during the strike and stop the outsourcing of their jobs?"
The NDP has proposed legislation, dubbed the Anti-Scab Labour Act, that would bar the use of replacement workers during labour disputes except in emergencies. Gretzky is a co-sponsor of Bill 90, which has been introduced for the 16th time. Bill 90 underwent first reading last month.
About 250 members of Locals 1959 and 240 walked off the job at Windsor Salt on February 17 in a dispute with the mine's U.S.-based owner, Stone Canyon Industries, with the contracting of work to non-union members a sticking point.
