Kyiv Home Project to be unveiled Sunday

A family from war-torn Ukraine will get a look at their new Windsor-Essex home Sunday.

A ceremony is set for Sunday afternoon to unveil the Kyiv Home Project in Cottam, a new home built from scratch for a family from Ukraine. The Taverine family worked with BK Cornerstone and Cottam United Church to complete the home.

The ribbon-cutting Sunday will mark the completion of the project's first phase, according to the office of Essex MP Chris Lewis.

"Phase Two of the program will commence after the grand opening when Cottam United Church will take over the care and integration of these families," read a release from Lewis' office. "The Mayor of Kingsville [Dennis Rogers] will speak and thank those stakeholders who have made this project possible."

The family of four is expected to take up residence soon and has already found employment, according to Lewis' office. The children are already attending local schools and receiving health care, which is among the services being provided under the second phase.

The project was inspired by a family who emigrated to Canada from Bosnia in 1997.

The project is still looking for people willing to donate furniture and building materials, along with local farmers and grocers willing to provide food. Complete information on the Kyiv Home Project can be found on its official website.
