We've all laid in bed on warm nights and heard the loud vehicles and motorcycles roaring by our homes.
With warmer weather coming to the region and more people sleeping with the windows open, Windsor police have begun their annual Anti-Noise Campaign.
"Noise related to motor vehicles is one of the most common complaints we receive at the Windsor Police Service during warmer weather," said Police Chief Jason Bellaire. "Through this campaign, we hope to raise awareness about the harmful effects of noise pollution and encourage people to be more considerate and compassionate towards others in our community."
Patrol officers have begun additional enforcement, cracking down on drivers who intentionally rev their engines, spin tires, perform "donuts", blast loud music, and otherwise disturb the peace. Police will use existing noise bylaws in Windsor and Amherstburg as a guide, though citations can be issued for other "unnecessary noise" violations under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act.
The campaign last year resulted in 2,726 citations given for speeding, stunt driving, and other noise-related infractions over a four-month period.
Residents can file a noise complaint by calling the Windsor police's non-emergency line at (519) 258-6111 or by using the online reporting system. 911 should only be used for life-or-death emergencies.
The 2023 Anti-Noise Campaign runs through September 5.
