The decision to put down an extra loonie for a lottery ticket has paid off for a Windsor man.
Francisco Smith said he is a regular lottery player who has never thought twice about paying an extra dollar to activate the Encore feature on a Lotto 6/49 ticket. For the April 5 draw, it paid off with a second prize of $100,000.
The father and grandfather checked his numbers with the OLG website and realized he had matched the last five Encore digits to land the prize.
"I thought, 'Wow, that’s $100,000,'" said Smith when he picked up his cheque at the OLG Prize Centre in Toronto. "Then went up to bed to tell my wife who was sleeping. She said, 'Okay', and went back to bed. The next morning, I told her I really did win, and she said, 'Okay', and went to work. My whole family thought I was pranking them."
The healthcare worker plans to invest his winnings.
Smith bought his winning ticket at Corner Stone on Sandwich Street West in Windsor.
