The chief of the region's ambulance service has announced his plans to retire.
In an email sent to staff Wednesday evening, Essex-Windsor Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Chief Bruce Krauter said he will be retiring from his role, after leading the force that serves nearly 400,000 residents across Windsor, Essex and Pelee Island, for 10 years.
"My career has been rich and rewarding, and I have decided that I can now move on to the next chapter," read Krauter's statement. "I have full confidence Essex-Windsor EMS is and will be in good hands and is ready for the next chapter."
Krauter, who has been a paramedic for 42 years, expressed his gratitude to the region for all the years of support, referring to the counties' administrators and council members "the best team around."
County Warden Hilda MacDonald has expressed her gratitude to Krauter and his team for providing Essex County with exemplary care to the area over the last decade.
"Replacing someone with Chief Krauter’s experience, passion, commitment and drive will be challenging, but in his typical fashion, he is making it as easy as possible for us," said MacDonald. "Thanks to Chief Krauter and his entire team, Essex-Windsor EMS provides a service that is second to none and always looking to improve. We couldn’t ask more of a chief."
Krauter will remain as the chief for the remainder of the year. His last day is set for February 29, 2024.
