Off-duty Windsor officer nabs suspected serial shoplifter

A Windsor man is facing multiple charges after being subdued by an off-duty police officer.

According to Windsor police, Constable Patrick Wojdylo was at Devonshire Mall Tuesday on a day off when he observed suspicious activity.

Wojdylo apprehended a 48-year-old man and kept him occupied until on-duty officers arrived to take him into custody.

Few details have been released, but there were reports of theft from at least four stores in three locations, Devonshire Mall, the Roundhouse Centre, and the nearby Marshall's store. Police say a total of $1,300 in stolen goods was recovered.

The suspect is now charged with two counts of theft under $5,000 and breach of a probation order.

The charges have not been proven in court.
