West-end skate park named in memory of Ryan Barron

The skate park in Atkinson Park has been renamed the Ryan Barron Memorial Skate Park.

Barron was known in the community for his passion for skateboarding and his willingness to share that passion with anyone who visited the park.

"It wasn't just a place where he came to skate and worry about himself. He would bring people in. I've had so many younger come up to me and say how he would bring them in and teach them skills. He really included everyone that would come to the park," said Terry Barron, Ryan's father.

Barron was killed in 2016 after he was struck by a car while skateboarding in Vancouver.

After his death, the Friends of Atkinson Park and Pool Committee began fundraising to add a skate bowl to the park in Ryan's memory. So far, around $60,000 has been raised. It's estimated the addition would cost around $300,000.

While they continue fundraising, the City of Windsor agreed to rename the skatepark in Ryan's honour.

Ryan's family and friends were on hand Tuesday afternoon as the new sign was unveiled.

"Total amazement, it's just incredible how the community has shown their support for Ryan all during this time and it really makes me happy to see," said Terry Barron.
