Government announces funding for Hwy. 3 widening, new 401 interchange

The provincial government has committed to more road improvement projects in the region.

Premier Doug Ford will be in Kingsville Thursday afternoon to announce that the government has awarded a contract to design, build, and finance the widening of Highway 3 between Essex and Leamington.

“Right across the province, our government is making historic investments in roads and highways to tackle gridlock, connect communities and build our economy,” said Ford.

The $138 million contract was awarded to GIP Paving.  Construction is already underway.

It has also committed to assisting the City of Windsor with plans for a new interchange connecting Highway 401 to Lauzon Parkway.

The Highway 3 expansion project includes widening Highway 3 from two to four lanes for 15.6 kilometres between Essex and Leamington.

The government will also provide funding to support the City of Windsor to procure an Environmental Assessment and design for the new interchange.

“Building a new interchange to connect Highway 401 to Lauzon Parkway will be a game-changer for the City of Windsor and I want to thank Premier Ford and Minister Mulroney for working with us to advance this important project. Home to a new battery plant and even more jobs, Windsor needs a reliable and connected transportation network to get people where they need to go. I am so pleased that this government is prioritizing building and improving infrastructure that will help our city thrive,” said Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens.
