Health unit releases video tour of SafePoint (VIDEO)

Windsor-Essex residents can now get an idea of how Windsor's new safe-consumption site works.

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit has released a video tour of SafePoint, the safe-consumption site in downtown Windsor. The video was first presented to members of the health unit's board at its meeting Thursday afternoon.

The seven-and-a-half-minute video shows the viewer the process of guiding a client through the facility. According to the health unit, the video was produced as part of its community engagement mission.

Alexis Erickson, program coordinator for chronic disease and injury prevention at the WECHU, narrates the video as a client is guided through intake, then the consumption area, followed by the post-consumption process, which includes referrals for wraparound care if the client wishes to pursue that route. Help with accessing other resources is also available.

According to figures presented to the health unit in May, SafePoint has had an overall positive response. After opening on April 26, the site had helped 24 clients in its first two weeks of operation.

SafePoint is now open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Clients do not need a health card or referral to access services, which are provided free of charge.

If you want a personal tour of SafePoint, you can visit on Friday mornings between 8:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m.
