Weapons suspect now facing a total of 18 charges

A Leamington man reportedly injured during an arrest last week in Lakeshore is now facing a long list of charges.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said the OPP got a report about an erratic man on Monday, July 3, and found him on West Belle River Road. A police presence was seen between County Road 22 and County Road 42.

The suspect ran at the officer with a weapon and took a gun from the police cruiser before fleeing. The man was later found in the river. Police removed him and rushed him to hospital. With that, the SIU was notified, and it invoked its mandate.

The OPP announced Tuesday that the 21-year-old man is facing 18 charges related to the incident.

The charges include three counts of being in a dwelling unlawfully and three counts of failing to comply with a release order. Other counts include dangerous operation of a weapon, mischief under $5,000, assaulting an officer with a weapon, disarming an officer, resisting arrest, assault with a weapon, and careless use of a firearm.

Charges also include possessing a weapon for dangerous purposes, unauthorized possession of a firearm, knowledge of unauthorized possession, possession of a prohibited firearm, and robbery with intent.

The charges have not been proven in court. The suspect is being held pending a bail hearing.
