The City of Windsor has declared intimate partner violence an epidemic.
Councillor Jo-Anne Gignac introduced a notice of motion at Monday night's council meeting to make the declaration and adopt 86 recommendations that came out of the City of Ottawa's inquest into the murders of three women.
"In Windsor-Essex in 2022, there were 2,378 intimate partner violence calls made to police and 2,357 crisis calls to women's shelters," said Gignac. "It's a huge epidemic."
Council approved Gignac's motion and forwarded it to the Windsor Police Service and provincial government representatives.
"I know we've discussed this at the Windsor Police Board, certainly it's an issue of concern. And I think time is of the essence to get this moved forward."
