ERCA advises caution around water as rain continues

A Watershed Conditions Statement is in effect throughout the Essex region.

The Essex Region Conservation Authority (ERCA) is concerned about the accumulation of standing water in low-lying areas, especially next to and within floodplain areas.

A special weather statement was issued for the area, by Environment Canada earlier on Saturday, and additional rain is expected to fall Sunday. The expected rainfall falls below Flood Watch thresholds but the combination of above-average lake levels, wet ground conditions, and forecasted rainfall prompted the Watershed Conditions Statement.

The statement was issued on Saturday afternoon and, as more rain is expected over the weekend, it will remain in effect until 10 a.m. Monday, July 17.

People are encouraged to take extra caution and avoid waterways and shorelines during this time. Children, pets, and livestock should also be kept away from flowing or standing water.

"The combination of slippery banks and fast-moving water can be dangerous," the ERCA advised in the statement.

The ERCA will modify its advisory if forecasts change.
