Visitors to a Windsor park may have already seen some colourful additions.
Ahead of next weekend's Windsor PrideFest, the Windsor-Essex Rainbow Alliance has helped create six new rainbow picnic tables at Lanspeary Park, where most of the festivities will take place. The tables were formally unveiled Thursday at a media event.
Windsor-Tecumseh MP Irek Kusmierczyk says the project is part of the Canada Healthy Communities Initiative, a $60-million investment from the federal government.
"Investments like the one unveiled today at Lanspeary Park are vital to strengthening Windsor-Essex and ensuring we are creating safe community spaces for all residents to enjoy," said Kusmierczyk.
The tables are displayed in the order of the colours seen on the rainbow flag. The Alliance said the purpose of the tables is to symbolize the idea of the local LGBTQ+ community having a "place at the table".
The Windsor-Essex Community Foundation (WECF) added an investment of its own to celebrate its 40th anniversary.
"This year, we are investing in the community to create projects that will invest in lasting change, reflect who we are as the people of Windsor and Essex County, value our sense of place and culture, and honour both our local history and our future as it unfolds," said WECF Executive Director Lisa Kolody.
