United Way $50K short of fundraising goal

The United Way Windsor-Essex County is appealing to the public to help them reach their fundraising goal for the Summer Eats for Kids program.

The program supplies children and families in need with nutritious food during the summer months when school nutrition programs are closed.

Demand for the program is up. Compared to last summer, another 200 families a week are coming forward for help, and the United Way is $50,000 short of its fundraising goal of $185,000.

The United Way pointed out one in three food bank users are children.

"Our goal is to distribute 3,500 bags of food," said CEO Lorraine Goddard. "The dollars will be spent directly to purchase food for the program."

For $25, donors can support a family with a week's worth of fruits, vegetables, and snacks.

Anyone interested in donating or hosting a fundraiser can visit the United Way's webpage.
