Leamington considers loosening bylaw on backyard chickens

Leamington is reviewing its bylaw that allows homeowners to keep chickens on their property if it is zoned Agricultural Residential.

Residents can keep chickens and ducks on their property if it is zoned Agricultural General, Agricultural Hobby Farm, or Agricultural Restricted.

After hearing from residents, the municipality said it also might consider allowing them on properties zoned Agricultural Residential.

It is not considering allowing them in the urban area of Leamington.

The municipality will hold a public meeting on September 7 so the public can hear about proposed changes and provide feedback. The meeting starts at 2:30 p.m. at the Leamington Municipal Building.

Residents who can't attend can comment on the municipality's website.

Councillors will review the proposed changes and public input at an upcoming meeting on October 10.
