Students benefitting from new skilled trades centre

High school students interested in the skilled trades now have a dedicated training centre to learn new skills.

The St. Anne Catholic Skilled Trades Academy and Learning Centre celebrated its official grand opening on Wednesday. The centre is the home for Grade 10-12 students working towards their apprenticeships in carpentry, masonry, plumbing, and welding.

“Back in 2015, along with our partners at the Ontario Masonry Training Centre, we launched our masonry program at F.J. Brennan Catholic High School,” Byrne said. “It was a program that took off quickly and would eventually become the model for our extremely successful Construction Academies. Since then we have launched academy programs in electrical, plumbing, and carpentry & construction at three different high schools, and hundreds of students have started down the pathway towards exciting careers in the trades, earning many of their apprenticeship hours in our schools and in co-op placements at worksites throughout Windsor-Essex.”

Students graduating from the program are ready to pursue a career in their chosen field.

"When they leave here and actually go out they're very job ready, they're very employable and they do great service for not only the Windsor-Essex County area but really throughout the province and country and they're highly sought after," said John Ulicny Executive Superintendent of Education and Human Resources.

Right now there are around 80 students enrolled in programming at the centre, but there are opportunities to expand.
