Leamington to assess Big Tomato

The Municipality of Leamington warns residents to expect a flurry of action around the Big Tomato on Tuesday.

It will assess the current state of the landmark at the corner of Talbot and Mill Streets, ensuring its structural integrity is intact and seeing what repairs are needed.

The visitors' booth opened in 1961 but closed in 2019 and hasn't reopened. The municipality and the Leamington and District Chamber of Commerce operated it.

"This thorough examination will provide valuable insights into whether the existing structure can be repaired, renewed, or possibly relocated to ensure its continued presence as a cherished landmark," said the municipality.

Crews will remove parts of the ceiling inside the tomato and clear any debris.

The municipality didn't say how long the assessment would take, just that "every effort will be made to ensure minimal disruption to the surrounding area."
