Long delays rationalize changes to Tecumseh Transit fixed route

Some major changes are coming for Tecumseh Transit next Wednesday. It's eliminating six stops on the fixed Monday-to-Friday route.

A report to town councillors this week recommended eliminating the stops because of traffic congestion and low ridership.

One of the stops averaged less than one rider a month.

Town councillors signed off on moving stop 5, at the Sobey's Plaza to Manning Road just north of Amy Croft Drive.

Stops 10 to 13 at Arlington Boulevard and Tecumseh Road, Tecumseh Road at Peace Park, Brighton Road at Old Tecumseh Road, and Riverside Drive at Pentilly Road will be eliminated during the week, along with Stop 39 on the east side of Lesperance Road south of County Road 22.

Riders can still request a stop at those locations on Saturdays when transit switches to on-demand service.

"Based on the foregoing low ridership statistics and the amount of time required to access these stops, continued service to them cannot be justified," read a report. "Servicing these stops in the current manner delays the bus and therefore negatively affects the reliability of service for the balance of the route in areas of higher demand."

Tecumseh Transit received complaints about delays of up to 30 minutes at more popular stops.

The town council approved a fixed route last June, hoping to improve reliability.

The changes to the route take effect on November 1.
