Tecumseh's 2024 draft budget calls for 5.55 per cent increase

Town of Tecumseh residents will likely be paying more in property taxes next year.

The 2024 draft budget was presented to Tecumseh Town Council Tuesday night. If it stays as submitted, residents will face a municipal tax increase of 5.55 per cent.

The owner of a property valued at $250,000 will pay an additional $175 a year should the budget be adopted as is.

"The 2024 proposed budget provides for the delivery of municipal programs and services, maintaining the high standard of services our residents are accustomed to," read a release from the Town.

The total levy required under the draft budget is $28.9-million, or a $1.5-million increase from the 2023 spending plan.

Draft budget highlights, available on the Town's official website, include continued work and completion of key infrastructure projects, such as a sanitary sewer model update, maintenance of the five-year capital plan, and improvements in operational efficiency.

Other projects supported in the draft budget include the new Lacasse Park grandstand, set for completion in spring 2024. The list also includes amenities at Lakewood Park, a splash pad at Southfield Park, and the completion of renovations at the CADA Branch Library.

Residents are encouraged to continue providing budget feedback through the Placespeak platform, starting Thursday and through January 5, 2024.

Budget deliberations will begin at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, January 16, and conclude the following day if necessary. Town Council is expected to approve the completed budget at its meeting on January 23.
