Inquest into Tecumseh man's death underway

An inquest into the death of a Tecumseh man who was shot by an Ontario Provincial Police officer is underway.

Derek Teskey, 48, died in the hospital on June 14, 2019, after being shot during an altercation with officers at his Tecumseh home.

The inquest is expected to last five days with five witnesses scheduled over the proceedings.

The jury has heard that police were called to Teskey's home by his mother after he threatened to kill himself with a knife.

Once police arrived, there were altercations with three OPP officers. All were injured during the incident.

The jury is expected to make recommendations aimed at preventing further deaths.

The Special Investigations Unit, the body responsible for investigating police officers involved in serious occurrences, determined the officer involved was not criminally responsible for the death.
