A lifesaving drug will now be a fixture of emergency vehicles in the Town of Essex.
The Windsor Essex County Health Unit (WECHU) is partnering with Essex Fire and Rescue to place naloxone kits in emergency vehicles.
"Through this program, the WECHU provides naloxone nasal spray to eligible community organizations that serve clients who are at risk of an opioid overdose," read a media release from the health unit. "Naloxone is a drug that can temporarily reverse the effects of an opioid overdose."
Firefighters will be trained to administer the drug if they are called to an overdose situation.
The partnership with Essex Fire and Rescue is the sixth among emergency departments in Windsor-Essex, after Windsor police, LaSalle police, Windsor Fire and Rescue, Amherstburg Fire, and Essex-Windsor EMS. There are now 26 partnerships in the region through the Ontario Naloxone Program (ONP).
