The first cars could be making their way across the Gordie Howe International Bridge in just one year.
Construction of the historical infrastructure project hit many milestones in 2023.
The first of 216 stay cables were installed in January 2023, to date, 130 are complete.
Throughout the year, residents on both sides of the border have watched as the bridge deck stretches over the water. To date, 50 per cent of the 42-meter deck is in place.
Both bridge towers have now officially reached their full heights of 220 meters. The tower in the US was done in August while the Canadian tower was finished in December.
Also completed this year was the observation area in Malden Park, funded through the Community Benefits Plan Neighbourhood Infrastructure Strategy.
Construction on the many buildings and structures at both ports of entry also continues.
When construction was launched in September of 2018, the 6-lane cable stay bridge was scheduled to be complete by the end of 2024. While COVID-19 and supply chain issues caused delays in the project between 2020 and 2022, the deadline has not been adjusted.
