Do you have something to say about Windsor but don't have an audience? The City of Windsor wants to change that.
It wants submissions from residents of all ages for a new initiative called Windsor Voices, celebrating National Poetry Month in April.
"Everybody has a story to tell, and yours is unique," said Marty Gervais, Windsor's Poet Laureate Emeritus. "Tell it in your own words, put your own spin on it, make it come alive in a way that will melt the hearts of everyone who is willing to listen."
Until February 16, residents can submit short, six-to-ten-line inspirational poems, stories, and photos on one of two themes.
For the first theme, contributors can share what the city means to them, whether it's the neighbourhoods, cultural traditions, or landmarks.
"I hope we receive neighbourhood stories that reflect on every day relationships and community traditions that span generations," said Multicultural Storyteller Teajai Travis. "As a kid growing up in Sandwich Town, I remember summer cookouts. The neighbourhood would gather in someone's backyard and party noon to night. Back then, the adults were your aunts and uncles, your friends were your cousins, and the village was raised by everyone."
The second theme is about the weather and is the League of Canadian Poets' 2024 theme for National Poetry Month.
"Through sun, snow, rain, wind, fog, and many other iterations, we find the captivating presence of weather. With poetic flair, weather dictates the rhythms of our lives from coast to coast," offered the League.
The submissions, chosen by the city's Poet Laureate and Storytellers, will be displayed on television screens and walls in municipal facilities, on keepsake bookmarks, and as part of an online zine.
The city embarked on a similar initiative in 2021 during the pandemic focused on "resilience."
"This will once again get poetry and stories out into the community while showcasing unique voices and perspectives that help to build and sustain a welcoming, diverse, inclusive, and creative Windsor for all," said Mayor Drew Dilkens.
Contributors can email culturalaffairs@citywindsor.ca using the subject line "Windsor Voices." Submissions must include your name, full mailing address, chosen theme, and submission type.
Authors will find out in February or March if their submission was chosen.
