Essex Fire and Rescue Services mourns loss of firefighter

Firefighters in Essex are mourning the sudden death of one of their own.

Jared Burns was a firefighter at Station 3 in Harrow. He passed away on Sunday.

He joined the fire department in 2021 and was only 42.

"On behalf of Essex Fire and Rescue Services, I would like to extend my heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Jared Burns," Fire Chief Jason Pillon wrote in a message on the service's webpage. "Jared was a dedicated member of the team who demonstrated strength and bravery to serve our community. He will be deeply missed."

Burns also worked at Vollmer in Windsor. His obituary said he was an avid Detroit Red Wings and Detroit Lions fan. He enjoyed playing hockey and staying at his cottage in Haliburton.

Essex Fire and Rescue Services plans to honour Burns with a Firefighter Walkthrough Thursday evening during his visitation at Gerald A. Smith Funeral Home on King Street in Harrow.

Visitations are planned for 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, January 11, at Gerald A Smith Funeral Home.

There will be a mass at St. Anthony's of Padua Church on Munger Street in Harrow on Friday, January 12, at 11 a.m., with Burns's cremation to follow.

His wife, Jennifer, is taking donations by cheque for a trust for their two children, Ashlylnn and Avery.
