Charity responds to fraud investigation

The South Asian Centre for Windsor is making changes to its bylaws after police charged a former member of its board with fraud.

On Tuesday, police arrested an 81-year-old man who is accused of defrauding the charity out of over $362,000 over a 12-year period.

The charity reported the financial irregularities to the Windsor Police when the accused, a former president and treasurer, refused to provide accounting for some missing funds.

“SACW has implemented new financial controls to prevent future misconduct. We are determined to recover the misappropriated funds,” said Dr. Fazle Baki, the current president of SACW. "On February 6, 2024, new bylaws were adopted at the SACW’s special general meeting requiring Board approval for the opening of any SACW bank account and two Board-appointed signatories for every cheque or contract made on SACW’s behalf."

The former board member has been charged with fraud over $5,000, laundering the proceeds of crime, and possession of property obtained by crime. The charges have not been proven in court.
