Kingsville District High School students, parents, and alumni rallied outside the school Friday afternoon to protest the name selected for the new school.
During a meeting of the Greater Essex County District School Board Tuesday night, trustees voted to name the school Erie Migration Academy.
The name was not one of two names, Kingsville District Academy and Greater Kingsville Academy, selected by the naming committee.
Student walkout organizer Emmerson Jadischke indicated they are hoping the name can be reconsidered.
"Two names were brought forward and one of those was supposed to be used or the process was supposed to restart but instead they completely disregarded all the voices in our community and chose a different name," said Jadischke.
The new school is set to open in September. It will bring together students from parts of Essex, Kingsville, and Pelee Island.
Trustee Julia Burgess suggested the new name Erie Migration Academy because she felt it was more inclusive of all three school communities.
"I think the name Kingsville should be in it and a lot of our community feels the same way. As you can see there's so many of us here an we all feel very passionately about our community,' said Jadischke.
