Deer goes for a swim at Vollmer Centre

Swimmers were interrupted by a deer Sunday afternoon in LaSalle.

At around 2:45 p.m. a deer crashed through a north glass window off Laurier Parkway.

Director of Culture and Recreation Patti Funaro said the deer came in near the hot tub and there was a lot of shattered glass.

"Thankfully, the hot tub was not in use when this happened. There were some swimming lessons and about 30 participants in the pool and then parents and guardians in the viewing area," she said.

Funaro added that the lifeguards were able to clear the pool and get people exited from the area.

"Everyone was able to get to the changing room safely, so there were no injuries to anyone from the public and as far as we know the deer was not injured and was able to be coaxed outside," she said.

Staff will now be cleaning up the shattered glass and repairing the window.

Funaro said staff will be re-evaluating on when to re-open the pool on Monday.

"Because the deer went into the pool we are treating it by the same guidelines we would if there was a pool fouling just to be sure we've disinfected everything," she said.

She added that this will include bringing chlorination levels up and leaving it for a certain period of time and then bringing it back down.

"This is just one of those situations that you can't really train for. Our staff did a really great job remaining calm in the situation and getting everybody out of the pool area and getting the deer outside," Funaro said.
