Construction on new hotel underway

The Petcon Hospitality Group has broken ground on a new hotel in Tecumseh.

The TownePlace Suites by Marriott will be located on Sylvestre Drive, just off the E.C. Row Expressway, with 142 extended-stay rooms.

"The battery plant and hospital are going to be a huge driver in the next year and a half. But we've had some success down the road and the interesting part is that it's not an extended stay property and we've noticed that a lot of our guests, the majority, are using it for long term," said Davide Petretta, president of the Petcon Hospitality Group.

The group also owns the Holiday Inn Express & Suites in Lakeshore, which opened in 2021.

Construction is expected to take between 16 to 18 months.

"This here is going to help us greatly in terms of building even more economic development opportunities, especially on the tourism side," said Tecumseh Mayor Gary McNamara. "You can see the demand for short-term housing is greatly needed in the region."

The hotel will employ around 80 people when it is operational.
