Fatal train collision investigated in Lakeshore

Investigators have been looking into a fatal crash involving a VIA Rail train in Lakeshore.

Essex County OPP reported on its X account an "increased police presence [Wednesday] morning in the area of Old Tecumseh Road and County Road 22 at the Via Rail tracks."

It was later confirmed by the OPP that a pedestrian had been struck by the train and killed.

The OPP have said that there has been no threat to public safety and the death is not suspicious. There were also no road closures.

VIA Rail has confirmed that an incident involving its #70 train from Windsor to Toronto took place around 6 a.m.

"No passengers or on-train service crew were injured during the incident," read an email to WindsorNewsToday.ca from VIA Rail. "Emergency services and local authorities were contacted, and the tracks are currently shut down for the investigation causing delays for VIA trains #71 and #72. VIA train #70 was allowed to proceed and is now on its way to Toronto...Our thoughts, of course, are with those affected by this incident."

As of noon Wednesday, a large presence of police and Lakeshore firefighters remained on scene, along with VIA Rail police.

Those planning to travel to or from Windsor on VIA Rail should check the status of their train on its official website.
