Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) in Essex County have named four people to work with its officers on managing court tasks.
Appointed as Special Constables working out of the Essex County Detachments are Crystal Wall, Cheryl Chevalier, Justin Richardson, and Sarah Yalda.
Special Constables are a unique category in law enforcement. They are technically civilian employees of the OPP, but they have been granted limited authority to carry out specific tasks.
Roles include acting as security officers who ensure the security of major government buildings, and as offender transportation officers who transfer offenders between secure institutions and the courts.
Other tasks include acting as forensic identification technicians who provide investigative support, including the processing and examination of evidence; and as court officers who manage case files, go between the detachment and the court, and provide security services and escorting offenders.
Successful candidates for the Special Constable designation are trained at the OPP Headquarters in Orillia and appointed by the appropriate hiring manager. Applicants can not submit as an individual to get this status.
Job postings with the OPP are available on its online portal.
