LaSalle's Mayor seeks traffic study on Front Road

It's just a first step, but LaSalle Mayor Crystal Meloche plans to ask councillors tonight to back a motion calling for a traffic study on Front Road.

Development increased along Front Road in recent years, with new homes at Victory Road and three more residential projects planned at Martin Lane.

Amherstburg is also growing, and many residents there use Front Road to commute to Windsor.

"There is a lot going on in that area, and it's not just that area. Front Road, itself, has become busier," she said.

Meloche said with more cars on the road, residents don't feel safe.

"Certain hours of the day, it's almost impossible to safely turn out because of the high amount of traffic. There's not enough brakes in between to allow you to safely turn," she explained. "We're also getting calls from residents who walk in the area, and they're saying it's not safe to walk or cross Front Road."

Meloche thinks the answer might be traffic lights on Front at Martin Lane and Victory Road, but the town can't act alone. Front Road is a county road, so it's ultimately up to those on that council.

"This is just a first step," said Meloche. "Because it is a county road, we do need the county's support."

She said there have been crashes, but a study would give decision-makers a clear picture of how much traffic is using Front Road.

LaSalle Town Council meets on Tuesday night.
