High school debate team headed to national competition

A debate team from Assumption College Catholic High School is headed to the National Ethics Bowl this week.

The team, Socrates Smarties, is made up of seven Grade 12 and Grade 11 students, Jessica Rachel, Teagan Furneaux, Safiya Shujah, Elizabeth Leo, Deborah Koko, Fatimah Siddiquie, and Andra Ifteni.

The team competed in London and Toronto this year to qualify for the national tournament that will be held at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights in Winnipeg May 2-4.

"We're very excited. We were actually a team that came together during COVID and that was really hard during the pandemic to figure out a lot of the online aspects of it," said Rachel. "We're very excited to actually go in person and be part of this event and see all this happening in real-time."

The team was provided with 14 topics they must prepare for to be ready for the national championship debate competition in Winnipeg.

Teacher/Coach Jeremy Bracken will join the team in Winnipeg.
