Nurses honoured for dedication to organ donation

The Trillium Gift of Life Network honoured two Windsor nurses for their advocacy for organ and tissue donation.

Andrea Brearley and Terra Popovski have been awarded the 2023 Provincial Donation Champion Award for excellence.

"They always have donation at the forefront of their practice. They're ensuring that the referrals come in timely and we are offering our population here the best end-of-life care we could possibly do and that is why they were nominated for this award," said Brooke Denomme, organ and tissue donation coordinator at Windsor Regional Hospital.

The nurses were honoured with a small presentation outside of Windsor Regional Hospital's Ouellette Campus on Tuesday morning.

"Organ donation is something that I believe in both professionally and personally so it does mean a lot to be nominated for this award," said Popovski.

In 2023, Ontario hospitals supported 365 organ donors and 1,853 tissue donors.

On average, there are 1,400 people in Ontario waiting for a life-saving organ transplant.
