OPP issues warning on E.L.K. Energy scam calls

The OPP in Essex County has urged people to be mindful of a scam involving a local utility.

Police have received complaints from people contacted by someone claiming to be from E.L.K. Energy. The caller threatens the resident or business owner with disconnection unless they provide a credit card payment over the phone.

"We are working closely with E.L.K. and neighboring municipalities to spread the word," said E.L.K. chairperson and Essex Mayor Sherry Bondy. "Please help spread the word and protect our community from this scam and future attempts."

E.L.K. Energy will never ask for a credit card payment by phone.

If you believe you have become a victim, contact your financial institution immediately, and call the OPP at 1-888-310-1122.

The utility has reminded customers not to give personal information to anybody they don't know, and if customers find any suspicious activity, questionable calls, or websites claiming to be E.L.K., to call them at (519) 776-5291.
