UofW renames Black Studies Institute, appoints director

The University of Windsor has announced big changes for its Black Studies Institute.

First, the institute is changing to the Black Scholars Institute.

Second, it has a new director, Doctor Camisha Sibblis.

Sibblis joined the Department of Sociology and Criminology last August. Her research focuses on identity, oppression, and the development of anti-oppressive networks.

"Her remarkable expertise and extensive experience will be instrumental in ensuring that our Black students and scholars not only succeed, but also lead in their respective fields," said Vice President of Research and Innovation Shanthi Johnson.

Sibblis said the name change signifies the university's dedication to creating a dynamic hub for all Black scholars regardless of discipline.

"I see leading the new Black Scholars' Institute as an opportunity to develop and amplify Black research excellence at the University of Windsor in ways that foster pride and belonging in the Black faculty and students on campus and in the broader community," she said.

In September, the university plans to open a dedicated space on campus for the institute and introduce 13 new Black Scholars.
