GoFundMe set up for scholarship in honour of Windsor nurse

A mourning Windsor family, trying to make sense of a terrible loss, hopes her memory will help nursing students at the University of Windsor.

Hannah Pare died unexpectedly last Thursday, two days after undergoing surgery for auditory tinnitus at St.Michael's Hospital in Toronto.

Grace Pare, Hannah's sister, set up a GoFundMe campaign to establish a scholarship in her name.

Hannah had been declared brain dead after suffering complications from the routine surgery. Her organs were donated, saving at least seven lives.

The 22-year-old was a neurology nurse at Windsor Regional Hospital.

"She was an amazing nurse and loved going to school, and she would be thrilled to know she can contribute to someone's education," wrote Grace.

The online campaign set a goal of $25,000 but had raised over $34,000 by Tuesday morning.

"Once we hit our goal, the rest of the donations will go towards a one-time gift to the peer mentor program at the University of Windsor in her name," wrote Grace in an update to the campaign. "Additionally, any donations will go to a charity that her family will deem would make Hannah proud."

The University of Windsor is also accepting donations in her name online or by calling 519-253-3000 ext. 2270.

The visitation for Hannah is on Friday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Families First on Dougall Avenue. There will be a Nightingale Nursing Tribute at 7:30 p.m.

The service is on Saturday at 11 a.m.
