Hospice volunteer up for prestigious provincial award

A Windsor man who has worked tirelessly behind the scenes at the Hospice for Windsor and Essex County is being recognized by the province for outstanding volunteerism.

John Martel is one of 14 people and two organizations receiving this year's June Callwood Outstanding Achievement Award for Volunteerism.

He's volunteered at the hospice for 25 years, serving on its board of directors.

The award is named after June Callwood, the Canadian journalist, social activist, author, Order of Ontario appointee and Companion to the Order of Canada.

Callwood was born in Chatham-Kent and grew up in Belle River.

She died in 2007 at the age of 83.
