Heads up drivers! Construction starts on roundabout at County Road 42 and 43

Those who drive by County Road 42 and County Road 43 on their way to and from work need to find an alternate route starting Monday.

The intersection is closed for construction on a new roundabout, part of a larger project to improve road capacity and enhance neighbourhood connectivity.

It'll remain closed for three months.

"The County of Essex is making a major investment in upgrading this corridor because it is vital to the entire region's economic future and quality of life," said County Warden and Leamington Mayor Hilda MacDonald. "County Road 42 and County Road 43 are critical connections to our new regional hospital site and the NextStar Energy electric vehicle plant. They are also used daily by residents and businesses from across Essex County and Windsor."

Residents can still access businesses between Banwell Road and Lauzon Road.

County Road 43 will be realigned from city limits to County Road 42. Concession Road 11 will get new storm sewers, water mains, and multi-use trails.

The county is expanding County Road 42 to five lanes with bicycle lanes, sidewalks and multi-use trails.

"We appreciate everyone's patience during the roundabout construction and look forward to completing a major enhancement to this intersection," said County Director of Infrastructure and Planning Services Allan Botham.

The second phase of the project should cost $22-million. The county relocated utilities and built new storm and sanitary sewers last year. The entire project could cost as much as $100-million.

The county has two public meetings coming up regarding other projects in the region. On Thursday, residents are invited to the Atlas Tube Recreation Centre in Belle River at 6:30 p.m. to discuss plans to reconstruct County Road 22 between I.C. Roy Drive and West Belle River Road. The other meeting is about the County of Essex Transportation Master Plan. It's on June 27 at the Essex County Civic Centre in Essex, starting at 5 p.m.
