Thursday night's annual Gary Parent Awards ceremony took on a more meaningful tone now that the namesake of the annual event has passed.
The Windsor and District Labour Council took time to recognize the efforts of some of those in the labour community at a ceremony at the Fogolar Furlan Club.
Parent died in May. He was a former president of the Labour Council and inspired many within the local social justice movement.
This year, Parent's adult children, Jason and Jennifer, presented the awards, and former CAW Local 444 president Ken Lewenza Senior delivered the keynote address.
Award winners on Thursday night are the Windsor Peace Coalition, Allison Kozalanka of Unifor Local 444, Ian Nash of CUPE Local 2974, Megan Simon of OSSTF Local 9, Patrick Murchison of CUPE 543, and OPSEU Local 162's Jennifer Van Zetten.
This year, the Social Justice Award is renamed after Father Bill Capitano, the labour council's former Chaplain and a Catholic Priest who also died earlier this year.
