Windsor-Detroit tunnel closing Sunday

The Windsor-Detroit tunnel will be closed briefly on Sunday morning for an emergency response exercise.

Between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m., members of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the Canadian Border Services Agency, and emergency services on both sides of the border, will take part in the mock exercise.

"We have a multi-tiered scenario coming this Sunday and I can't really tell you all about it other than to say it's super cool and it's on both sides of the tunnel in each plaza," said Tal Czudner, CEO of Windsor-Detroit Borderlink. "It's to make sure that we've got all the parties connected, communicating. We've got two countries, two provinces, about seven or eight organizations."

Czudner said the scenario is designed to test everyone's skills and communication between all parties.

The tunnel typically closes only twice a year, once for this emergency exercise and once for the Detroit Free Press Marathon in the fall.
