Seven-hour standoff results in arrest

A seven-hour standoff with police has resulted in the arrest of a 59-year-old man.

According to Windsor Police, shortly after 11 a.m. Saturday, officers responded to a call about a disturbance at an apartment building in the 900 block of Ouellette Avenue.

Police said a male resident had discharged several fire extinguishers throughout the building, then barricaded himself in an apartment.

The man then brandished weapons, made threats and threw items from his balcony.

In a news release, police said when the suspect refused to leave the apartment, officers set up a perimeter around the property and called in Windsor Police Emergency Services Unit (ESU) and a negotiator for assistance.

Following repeated attempts to negotiate, ESU members entered the apartment and arrested the suspect without incident.

The suspect faces multiple charges including assault with a weapon, uttering threats to cause death, and mischief over $5,000.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Major Crimes Unit at 519-255-6700 ext. 4830 or Crime Stoppers at 519-258-TIPS (8477).
