The transport of a restored Windsor streetcar will temporarily affect the use of the riverfront.
Beginning Monday, a portion of the Riverfront Trail will close to accommodate the moving of the historic Streetcar #351 from its restoration site to a permanent home at Legacy Park.
Part of the trail will be closed from Crawford Avenue to the C.M.H. Woods Pumping Station. Signage re-routing trail users to Riverside Drive will be in place at Crawford Avenue and Church Street.
"This closure is needed to accommodate construction and asphalt replacement at the Legacy Beacon and Park construction site," read a release from the City.
The $10.3-million restoration project is part of the City's Strengthen the Core Initiative, and is connected to "Windsor Works, An Economic Development Strategy for the City’s Future Growth".
Streetcar #351 was built in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1918, and was used for public transport on Windsor streets.
"This streetcar is a relic from Windsor’s past, one of those unique artifacts that is important because it is truly authentic to the city of Windsor’s history," said Mayor Drew Dilkens. "When I began conversations with George Sofos and Van Niforos, who were in possession of the streetcar, and later City Council and administration, I had no clear idea of what we were going to do, but I knew we had to do something. This streetcar is an important piece of Windsor’s history."
The streetcar will be positioned in a covered structure under construction, with an opening date set for sometime this fall.
The trail closures will last through Saturday, August 3.
